Sorry in advance to the POP music lover reader out there. Yes, you and that includes my old self too (If my old self could read this)
So, My mom and my sister are addicted to so called trending songs, you know those songs that ONLY play on the radio almost all the time, or the top trending songs on Spotify and you hear it everywhere you go in a mall, supermarket, restaurant, or forever 21? (I don't shop at f21 anymore or any other fast fashion store but you get what I mean) I knew that I used to like this kind of music, but then after a while I realized something that It didn’t make me any good or better human.
Sure sure, I’m not the same person when I'm in elementary school or that I was a year ago, or I’m not even really the same person I was when I started this sentence, because every experience changes us, at least a little. And I won’t be the same person when I die. O-kay...... Anyway, this is why I dislike a nowadays pop music.
First it’s a waste of time, aka you use it as an act of procrastination. You know that song that you can't get enough of even the lyrics are terrible but you just keep listening to it because you are so addicted to it and then you realize that you've been listening to the same song for the past couple hours and just jamming??
Second, it makes your brain rot. POP music are catchy, and nowadays they don't really make any goods to our society. Why? Just look at those lyrics, about love, drugs, weed, party, sex, bodies etc. For example:
"I didn't know that I was starving 'til I tasted you.." hm.. I'm pretty sure she's talking about pizza.
"See you standing over there with your body, Feeling like I wanna rock with your body" hm okay. Body, the lyrics basically is just about body.
"I eat my dinner in my bathtub, Then I go to sex clubs, Watching freaky people gettin' it on." This is omg. Why they play it everywhere while there are so many young folks scattered around? Oh my God, I get a headache every time I hear this song.
I wish they can play four seasons Vivaldi or symphony no. 40 Mozart instead. I wish I could find a public place that didn't play pop music, well maybe except Coffee shop, or Church.

I always listen to my music in private because every time I listen to it on speaker mode, people who has "a pop brain" judge it instantly. Like one time, my sister judges my music constantly and thinks my music is boring. She likes pop (nothing else as far as I'm concerned) So I was listening to my music playlist, then she said "your music is so boring, can we change to my playlist now?" I said okay. then guess what she played?...... "I didn't know that I was starving 'til I tasted you.." 🙃
There are so many genres that are worth to listen to. Don't get me wrong, pop music is not that all bad, there are great pop artist out there too, such as Ed-sheeran, Adele. The thing is I love jazz, classic, folk, indie, rock song, I have always been. Probably in the future, I might even consider to jump into a metal genre, yes I know! I heard they got a deep meaning behind those screaming and shouting. Why not giving it a shot?
Okay enough with the rants, Here are some of my favorite singers/songwriters that hopefully will get you from the POP music rot. Lol.
- Tom Rosenthal - best songwriter ever. Folk.
- She and Him - Indie folk, jazz, Indie pop.
- Norah Jones - Jazz.
- Michael Bublé - Jazz (technically some of his music are categorized as pop, but easy listening traditional pop music, and most of the songs are jazz anyway.)
- Lucy Rose - Indie Folk.
I chose music that makes me feel good, happy, rather than the other way around. I don’t think is a good thing to listen to so much music anyway, I've been training myself to listen to podcast and audio books/lecture rather than music. So I have a schedule for the time I listen to music, and the rest of the day I forced my self to listen to podcast and audio books/lectures (yes, I say that right "force") and the result is quite impressive. Eventually, myself is getting used to it, and the great thing is you get a new knowledge and make your brain filled with wonderful educational things, and plus you get to learn something new everyday, isn't it just wonderful?
